About Us + Dr. Neal J. Naff
Dr. Neal J. Naff
 Training and Background Dr. Neal Naff is a native of southwest Virginia. He completed his undergraduate education at the Virginia Military Insititute, where he was class president and valedictorian. He completed his medical school training and neurosurgical residency at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland. As a resident he was recognized by the National Stroke Association with an award as a national research fellow for his work on brain hemorrhages. Dr. Naff is Chief of Neurosurgery at Sinai Hospital of Baltimore and St. Joseph Medical Center and serves as Director of Clinical Neuroscience Education at Johns Hopkins Hospital Department of Neurosurgery. He also maintains clinical privileges at Carroll Hospital Center, GBMC, Northwest Hospital, and Union Memorial. He is the surgical director of the CyberKnife Radiosurgery Center at Sinai Hospital and serves as the Director of Performance Improvement for the International CyberKnife Society. He is an assistant professor of neurosurgery at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine and is active in the teaching, clinical, and research programs in that department. In 2001 he was awarded the faculty teaching award by the resident neurosurgeons at Johns Hopkins Hospital "In Recognition of Excellence in Teaching and Commitment to Resident Education". Based on a 2008 survey of Baltimore area physicians, Dr. Naff was named "Top Doctor" by Baltimore Magazine for the field of neurosurgery. He has authored over 50 peer reviewed articles, book chapters, and abstracts. He has active clinical and research interests in the treatment of complex spinal problems, brain and spinal tumors, brain hemorrhages, cerebral aneurysms, radiosurgery, Chiari malformations, adult hydrocephalus (NPH), spinal stimulation, spasticity, trigeminal neuralgia, and peripheral nerve disorders. He has been awarded nine federally funded and peer reviewed research grants for his clinical and research work. He lectures locally and nationally on brain, spine, and peripheral nerve disorders. He is an assistant professor of neurosurgery at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and is active in the teaching program for the neurosurgical residents at Johns Hopkins Hospital. He is also active on the neurosurgical teaching staff at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington DC where he is the Consulting Director of Peripheral Nerve Surgery. This includes frame based and frameless neuronavigation,intra-operative brain monitoring and mapping, Gliadel wafers, and Gliasite radiation balloons. Microsurgical repair of cerebral aneurysms Microsurgical treatment of AVM's AVM's (arteriovenous malformations) are an abnormal tangle of arteries and veins that may cause hemorrhages, seizures, or other problems. Microsurgical treatment of pituitary tumors Multimodality Treatment of Trigeminal Neuralgia Trigeminal neuralgia may be treated with several different techniques. Our practice provides all modalities to include microsurgical decompression, percutaneous rhizotomy, and radiosurgery. The Cyberknife provides the most advanced delivery of radiosurgery to brain and spine lesions.
